Morelia's Droguett Dedicates Victory For Native Chile
Hours after his native Chile was rattled by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake, Hugo Droguett dedicated the victory to his nation.
The Chilean dedicated the victory to his native Chile, which earlier in the day was rattled by an 8.8-magnituded earthquake that left some 700 dead, according to initial reports.
"It was a difficult match in that sense, sad because of what happened in my country," Droguett told reporters after the match. "It was something unexpected."
Droguett set up the only goal Morelia needed when he sent a ball to Elias Hernandez on the quarter hour that Hernandez finished from close range.
The earthquake had lingered on his mind all day, Droguett said. The massive temblor struck in the early-morning hours and leveled buildings and structures across Chile. On Sunday, the Chilean government announced that more than 700 people were confirmed dead.
"Nature sometimes strikes like this and sometimes it happens in other countries," Droguett said. "It happened in my country and hopefully we can get past this quickly and that people will recover."
Droguett said family members in Chile were safe.
"Thank God they only lost some material things," he said. "That's the least of it. The important thing is that they are fine, nothing happened to them. That's calming."
Thus, Droguett, who wore an undershirt with a get-well message scrawled on it, was able to focus somewhat on the match even though the earthquake was on the back of his mind.
"This game was obviously for them," Droguett said. "I knew that they probably couldn't watch (the game) but I know that somehow they'll find out that I played well and that I was able to send them a bit of a message with my shirt."
