Cruz Azul's Meza Gives Squad Credit For Well-Played Hour
Cruz Azul manager Enrique Meza said his side did well to improve their play against Atlas, even if it for just one hour.
Cruz Azul scored twice in the first 19 minutes and cruised to a 3-1 win. For manager Enrique Meza, to do so against Atlas made the victory more meaningful.
"We had a good victory because Atlas is a team that plays well," Meza said in a press conference. "Additionally, we had only been able to score two goals in seven matches and (Saturday) we had scoring chances and got three goals that should give us some strength."
Melvin Brown scored two goals, which was an unlikely source of offense. However, Christian Gimenez showed up. The former Pachuca star had struggled to produce but set up two goals against Atlas.
Cruz Azul had scored just two goals on the season before Saturday's match.
Still, Meza said his team still had holes.
"We did not play well because games are comprised of 90-plus minutes of play. After we got up 3-0, we started to do some strange things," Meza said. "We started to lose balls and then they got within 3-1. We started to play defensively and lost some confidence."
Overall, though, Meza said his team performed better for a longer stretch of time than it had before, even if it was not for 90 minutes.
"It's true, the team improved," Meza said. "The team played well for nearly an hour and we should be executing our plays better."
