Monterrey's Cardozo: Winning Libertadores Is The Ultimate

There is nothing better than winning Copa Libertadores, Monterrey's Neri Cardozo said.

Monterrey debuted in Copa Libertadores against Sao Paulo nearly two weeks ago, but the club did not show much respect towards the tournament.

Los Rayados sent a reserve-laden squad to Brazil and came away with a 2-0 loss.

Still, Monterrey's Neri Cardozo said the tournament was indeed important.

"That's the ultimate," Cardozo told Mexican daily Record. "To win a Libertadores is the ultimate."

Cardozo spoke from experience. As a member of Argentine giant Boca Juniors, Cardozo was part of the squad that won Copa Libertadores in 2007. Now with Monterrey, Cardozo's aspirations of winning the tournament have not fallen off.

"What I would most like to do is to win Libertadores, that's what I want," Cardozo said. "We have to try and get better day by day and the best thing is that all the players are doing well."

Monterrey will host Nacional of Paraguay on Wednesday in the club's second Copa Libertadores match. The team will have to make do without goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco and forward Aldo De Nigris, both of whom are with the Mexican national team for Wednesday's friendly against Bolivia.

And while it remains to be seen what kind of team manager Victor Manuel Vucetich sends out, Cardozo said the squad is deep enough to perform well in the tournament, or even to become the first Mexican team to win Libertadores.

"We have a roster of 25 or 26 players who are talented and play well," Cardozo said. "We have some very good players and great team capable of doing it."
