Chivas' Baez Relishes Historic Goal

Xavier Baez's goal against Pachuca helped give Guadalajara a record sixth consecutive season-opening victory.

Xavier Baez and Guadalajara each made history this week. For the club, a 1-0 win at Pachuca gave them their sixth consecutive win and set a new record for consecutive wins to open a season.

For Baez, though, history was a bit more personal. Baez was responsible for the score as he ripped a long-range shot that found its way past Pachuca's Miguel Calero and into the goal.

It's a memory he said he will carry with him for a while.

"It was a beautiful goal," Baez told Guadalajara daily Mural. "I liked it a lot and honestly it's going to stay in my memory as well as the fans' but above the team's because that is who benefited the most from it."

Baez broke a scoreless deadlock with his laser beam of a goal. But while the game only featured one goal, the match had plenty of drama.

"Pachuca had their opportunities but we were more focused and knew how to come out with the win," he said. "The two teams fought, played an open game and that was good for the supporters."

Baez said his team has benefited from playing as a unit from the start, and the team wants nothing more than to add to their high win and point total when Puebla visits Estadio Jalisco on Saturday.

"We're on a roll and we hope to continue on this little streak," Baez said. "We need to play even better than we have been and maintain the unity we have as a group. We need to get past this. This was a good win but we need to start thinking about Puebla."
