Lucky Goals Guide Toluca To First Win
Toluca were finally able to get a ball to bounce their way in a 3-1 win over America.
Lucky Diablos.
Toluca beat America 3-1 on Wednesday and players admitted the victory was obtained with a bit of luck.
"Luckily we won and we took a weight off of ourselves," Toluca's Martin Romagnoli told reporters after the match. "Now, we can't do worse than this. We wanted to win and leave all the other games in the past."
Toluca's first goal of the game was well-earned as Carlos Esquivel found Antonio Naelson "Zinha" at the top of the box, and the former Mexican international sent the ball past Guillermo Ochoa for the game's first goal.
But luck smiled on Toluca afterward. Esquivel fired a shot that deflected off Zinha and fell to Hector Raul Mancilla's feet, a chance the Chilean did not squander. Then, Manuel De La Torre's free kick bounced off Aquivaldo Mosquera and across the goal line for another goal.
Still, Toluca created their luck, Romagnoli said.
"We had fight and played soccer well, and were able to finish what we weren't able to in other games," he said.
Meanwhile, Mancilla said his team was able to withstand the pressures of trying to snap a five-match winless skid just fine.
"We played a good game and maintained our confidence and focus, and that's why we were able to get tree important points," he told reporters. "It was a key game against a good rival... This gives us confidence to go forward and think now about Morelia (Saturday's opponent). We showed that we are still capable of great things."
