Ugly Win Good Enough For Cruz Azul
Cruz Azul's Enrique Meza will take three points any way he can, he said after la Maquina's win over Morelia.
Late in their match against Morelia, Cruz Azul's Javier Orozco tried his fortune on a bicycle kick. His attempt bounced off a Morelia defender and fell to Cesar Villaluz's feet, who easily found the back of the net and gave Cruz Azul a much-needed 1-0 win.
To Cruz Azul manager Enrique Meza, it mattered little that Wednesday's win did not come with any style points.
"It was in important victory, no matter what it looked like," Meza said in a press conference. "We had the chance to score a goal and we improved on that aspect from the last match."
Still, even Meza admitted that his team did not exactly play their best football despite earning the victory.
"We're still far from thinking that we are playing well," Meza said. "We obtained the victory more on guts than having played well, but we didn't lower our shoulders and that's an accomplishment."
Cruz Azul's 2-0 loss to America on Sunday led Meza to call the game an embarrassment but such was not the case, despite his team's inability once again to put pressure on the opposing goal. Cruz Azul had just one goal entering the match, and their second goal of the season was a long time coming. The first tally came in the first match as la Maquina had gone four consecutive matches without scoring.
Three points gained in the win were well received by Meza.
"Victories are always imporatnt," he said. "We played against a team who came in playing well and to gain a victory under those circumstances, with the field in the condition it was in, I think that is a good win and perhaps will help revive us."
