Monterrey battled back from a 2-1 hole to beat Estudiantes.

Estudiantes Tecos jumped out to a lead but failed miserably in their attempts to hold onto it and eventually lost to Monterrey 4-3 in Estadio Tres de Marzo on Wednesday.

The defending champions scored three consecutive goals after falling behind 2-1 and were able to hold on for the win.

First Half

Monterrey were hit with a bit of early misfortune. Oswaldo Alanis Pantoja accidentally kicked Nery Cardozo in the face, a kick that opened a gash on Cardozo's forehead. Cardozo left the game and he was replaced by Abraham Dario Carreño. The move served as a blessing in disguise for two reasons.

First, Monterrey immediately converted the play as Pantoja was whistled for a foul. Walter Ayovi lined up the free kick, which was from about 30 yards out. The ball bounced off Diego Jimenez and settled in the back of the net.

Estudiantes though were resilient as Rodrigo Ruiz helped the hosts jump out ahead. First, Ruiz found Mauro Cejas in the 33rd minute in front of the net. Cejas buried his attempt and gave Estudiantes the equalizer.

Second Half

Ruiz was not done working his magic. In the 52nd minute, Rubens Sambueza broke through Monterrey's defense, dribbled into the penalty area and found Ruiz alone in front of the net. Ruiz easily tapped in a goal to give Estudiantes a 2-1 advantage.

The lead did not last very long. In the 58th minute, Osvaldo Martinez sent a ball from the right side of the field towards Carreño, who settled and took a touch to beat Juan Carlos Leaño's mark. Carreño slipped the ball into the back of the net to give the visitors the tie.

Carreño scored his second goal of the match just seven minutes later. On a corner kick, Carrreñ leapt higher than his Estudiantes counterparts and headed the ball into the back of the net.

In the 70th minute, William Paredes found Aldo De Nigris inside the box and De Nigris re-directed the pass on goal, and beat Mario Rodriguez for a goal.

Roberto Carlos Gutierrez finished a cross from Sambueza in the 80th minute but the goal was not nearly enough as Monterrey did well to hold on for the win.
