Cruz Azul 1-0 Morelia: Ugly, Late But Welcomed Win

Cruz Azul scored their second goal of the season and earned their second win of the season with a late tally against Morelia.

It was not pretty nor necessarily memorable but Cruz Azul will take it.

Cruz Azul beat Morelia 1-0 on Wednesday as Cesar Villaluz came through with a clutch goal in second half stoppage time to snap Cruz Azul's four-game winless skid.

Villaluz's goal is just the second scored by la Maquina this season. Ironically, the other goal also came in stoppage time, as Cruz Azul breat Jaguares 1-0 in the opening week of the season.

While Cruz Azul dominated possession throughout the match, the club was not much more potent in their attack as they had been in recent games. The only chances early on were half-chances, looks at goal that weren't completely there but still taken by Cruz Azul's attack, which was growing more and more desperate with each passing game.

Christian Gimenez, the club's high-profile offseason acquisition, again had a poor performance and was taken out with 11 minutes to play after having created little in his time on the field. His replacement, Villaluz, added a spark to the offense and the hosts capitalized in stoppage time.

On the game-winning play, Villaluz found himself with the ball in front of goal and put it past Moises Muñoz, who had been solid when called upon until that point.

Cruz Azul improved to 2-2-3 on the season while Morelia fell to 4-2-0.
