America Players Won't Overlook Winless Toluca
America's Enrique Esqueda said he expects a tough game from Toluca no matter what the record says.
But that does not mean America will take Toluca lightly when las Aguilas visit Estadio Nemesio Diez on Wednesday.
America players cautioned against overconfidence and said their side would approach Toluca the same way as if los Diablos were at their usual perch atop the league table.
"It would be a mistake to overlook them because they have players who are very talented and at any moment can be difference-makers," America forward Enrique Esqueda told Mexican daily Esto. "If we get overconfident, surely they will hurt us."
Toluca reached the semifinals last season, and finished second in the overall table in the Clausura '09 season. Toluca won the entire league in the Apertura '08 campaign but their winning ways have suddenly and unexpectedly been put on hold.
A high-octane offense, usually a trademark of Toluca teams, has not been evident this season as the club has scored just three goals. As a result, Toluca have just three points entering this contest.
America, meanwhile, bring in a 3-2-0 mark to Toluca, and Esqueda said his side just needs to maintain the formula that has brought them success this season.
"We have to keep doing what we've been doing, both at home and away," Esqueda said. "On the field, we are 11 versus 11 and surely it will be a tough game, like a game against Toluca has always been, but we'll try and return home with three points because that's what we want."
America are not quite relaxing yet. Three wins out of five games is progress but the work continues.
"There is still work to be done," he said. "We're in the process of working out some small details all around the field but I believe we are headed in the right direction and things will come out the way the manager wants."
