Jornada 6 Preview: No Rest For The Weary
Jornada 6 of the Mexican Bicentenario 2010 season gets underway just two days after the end of Jornada 5.
A high-profile matchup awaits in Estadio Hidalgo while others in Estadio Azul and Estadio Nemesio Diez would be more mouth-watering if the hosts weren't struggling terribly.
WEDNESDAY
Atlante vs. Jaguares, 9 p.m. ET
Atlante and Jaguares still don't know what it means to win in the Bicentenario. Both teams have 2 points each and are in desperate search for their first win. Jaguares will try to have their new coach, Pablo Marini on the side lines, while Atlantes Jose Guadalupe Cruz will avoid getting fired by securing a win. The game will be played in Veracruz which will give Jaguares a great chance to win since they can't do it at home. Santiago Solari and Miguel Angel Martinez will both be in doubt for Wednesday's game. Jaguares reports no losses for the encounter.
Prediction: Jaguares, 2-0.
Estudiantes vs. Monterrey, 9 p.m. ET
Estudiantes wants to keep going in the right direction after a poor start to the season. Estudiantes have not seen defeat in their last two encounters but a win over the current champions won't be something easy. Monterrey will be coming into the encounter motivated after their derby win against Tigres. The current champs have only one loss this season but they still remain winless away from home. Estudiantes have to deal with a huge blow to their starting line up. Their goal scorer Fredy Bareiro will be present in the encounter thanks to a suspension he picked up.
Prediction: Monterrey, 3-1.
Pachuca vs Chivas, 9 p.m. ET
This will be a clash of titans. Number 1 and Number to will do battle and the Superlider spot will be at stake. Chivas is yet to be defeated and is carrying a five game winning streak into the encounter. Los Tuzos will try to take away that streak just like they did in 2001 when they handed Chivas their first loss after 14 jornadas. Pachuca and Chivas both play a high octane offensive game. Pachuca is coming off a five goal performance, while Chivas posses the best scorer in the league, Javier Hernadez, who has scored at least once in every game he's played. Both teams call themselves "Mexico's Team" one of them given the title by the king Pele and the other earnt with honer, pride, and tradition. Pachuca will go without Dario Cvitanich and possibly Leobardo Lopez due to injury. Chivas will have Edgar Mejia and Sergio Avila sidelined.
Prediction: Pachuca, 3-2
Cruz Azul vs. Morelia, 9 p.m. ET
Three straight losses for La Maquina have not done the team any favors especially for manger Enrique Meza. They head into the midweek game against Morelia with a loss to America where a dominance has been established by the Aguilas. Morelia’s current form is the opposite of their rivals, coming in with a four game winning streak. Cruz Azul have Joel Huqui unavailable for selection because of injury and Morelia have a full squad at their disposal. The last time the two met was in the post season during the semifinals of the Apertura 2009, a contest that Cruz Azul won at their home stadium by a 2-1 score line.
Prediction: Morelia, 1-0
Puebla vs. San Luis, 9:30 p.m. ET
Both teams currently hold the same record; one game won, three lost, and one drawn. The season has not started off well for either team and they will be hoping to revert their fortunes. Over the weekend Puebla suffered a bashing at the hands of Pachuca losing 5-3. San Luis ended the game in a better manner, drawing 0-0 against Indios. Puebla will have a full squad available for the match while San Luis will be without Cesar Gonzalez due to suspension and Alfredo Moreno because if injury. The last time the two teams faced each other they ended the game with a 0-0 draw.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1
Queretaro vs. Pumas, 9:30 p.m. ET
Queretaro have surprised in the Bicentenario 2010 with their performances, only losing one game during the season. Going into the midweek game Queretaro hopes to extend their campaign against Pumas who have not lost this season but have drawn all games but one. Pumas will have Francisco Palencia and Fernando Morales out for the game because of injury and Queretaro will have a full squad available. The last time the two met Pumas walked away with a 3-0 win.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1
Atlas vs. Indios, 9:45 p.m. ET
Atlas had what the club hopes will be a brief setback in last weekend's match at Morelia. Atlas were hammered 3-0 by Morelia and the club's modest three-game winning streak went up in smoke. However, Indios will visit Guadalajara and Atlas' eyes are likely widening. Indios have scored just one goal this season, and that was an own goal put San Luis put into their own net. Indios' punchless offense and lack of confidence should help Atlas right their wrongs quickly.
Prediction: Atlas, 2-0
Toluca vs. America, 10 p.m. ET
Normally a glitzy matchup, Toluca are struggling and those struggles have taken some of the luster from this game. Toluca have scored just three goals this season and are 0-2-3 on the campaign. Toluca are rubbing elbows with Indios at the bottom of Group 1 while Chivas threaten to run away with the group title. America meanwhile are coming off a confidence-boosting 2-0 win over rivals Cruz Azul. America though need the victory in order to continue gaining confidence and momentum. Despite Toluca's struggles, though, the game will likely be difficult for las Aguilas to come away with a win.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1.
THURSDAY
Tigres vs. Santos, 9:45 p.m. ET
With Tigres executives and players saying they stand beside manager Daniel Guzman, it's enough to question whether or not Guzman's job really is safe. One thing is certain: the club needs to win now in order to restore whatever faith the club had in Guzman. Losing the Clasico Regio against Monterrey was not the greatest start, but Guzman's confidence can go a long way with a stronger effort than was shown last time. Santos, meanwhile, are coming off a tough home win over Toluca, and their own expectations are likely raised entering this game against Tiggres.
Prediction: Draw, 2-2
