Monterrey 2-1 Tigres: Clasico Regio Goes Monterrey's Way

The defending Mexican league champions handed their bitter crosstown rivals a 2-1 setback.

Monterrey's midweek tactics in Copa Libertadores may not have helped the club gain any points in South America but it may have given the team a win in Sunday's Clasico Regiomontano.

Monterrey beat bitter rivals Tigres 2-1 on Sunday, just four days after a reserve-laden squad lost to Sao Paulo in a Copa Libertadores game.

Monterrey had energy in the early going as the defending champions scored a pair of first-half goals, and a suffocating defense kept Tigres from doing much damage in the second half.

First Half

The teams exchanged a couple of early opportunities. Tigres' Everton Cardoso saw his close-range shot turned away by Jonathan Orozco in the 15th minute while Neri Cardozo's attempt two minutes later hit off the crossbar and went out for a corner kick.

In the 23rd minute, Monterrey won another corner kick and made this one pay off. The ball came in from the left side and skipped past Tigres' Cirilo Saucedo. The ball bounced off Tigres' Sergio Ponce and Aldo De Nigris was in position to clean up the mess as he tapped in the loose ball into an open goal.

De Nigris helped set up the second goal. In the 40th minute, De Nigris took the ball down the left side of the box and fed Neri Cardozo, who dribbled across the box and fired a shot on goal when he split a pair of defenders. The ball caromed off Jose Antonio Castro and into the back of the net.

Second Half

Tigres came out with a great sense of urgency in the second half, and their tenacity paid off. Tigres took the kick off, held the ball inside Monterrey's third and won a free kick when Lucas Lobos was fouled some 30 yards out. Lobos took the kick and Jesus Molina dived and buried a header into the back of the net.

Tigres however did not take advantage of their momentum as Monterrey controlled the next portion of the game. Aside form a shot by Itamar Batista in the 63rd minute, Monterrey barely heard from Tigres once more.

About the only other chance Tigres had was a free kick by Ponce late in the game that sailed over the crossbar.
