Banfield 2-1 Morelia: 10-Man Monarcas No Match For Banfield
Morelia went down to 10 men against Banfield and could not handle the Argentines afterward.
James David Rodriguez and Roberto Battion scored in the second half to give Banfield a comfortable lead. Luis Gabriel Rey scored in second-half stoppage time for Morelia.
The game was fairly even until Morelia's Adrian Aldrete was sent off in the 52nd minute. After that, the match favored the hosts.
Morelia chose to use their regular lineup as stars Miguel Sabah, Hugo Droguett and Miguel Sabah all played.
Sabah had an open look on goal in the 42nd minute. Sabah ripped a shot from 16 yards out on goal but Banfield 'keeper Christain Lucchetti dived and parried the ball away.
Early in the second half, though, Morelia gave away a huge advantage to Banfield as Adrian Aldrete was sent off for throwing an elbow in the 52nd minute.
James David Rodriguez scored just four minutes later as Banfield took advantage of the red card. Ruben Dario Ramirez sent a ball from the left side of the field to the far post and Rodriguez finished from close range.
Roberto Battion scored in the 79th minute off a corner kick. Walter Erviti sent a corner kick to the middle of the box and Battion powered a header past Moises Muñoz.
Morelia got a goal back but it was too late to do much more damage than that. Elias Hernandez took a set piece from the left side of the field and sent a ball to the far post, and Luis Gabriel Rey knocked the ball past Lucchetti and into the back of the net.
Morelia, though, were undone by the red card and left with a deserved loss.
