Monterrey allowed goals on either side of halftime as Sao Paulo beat Monterrey 2-0 in the Copa Libertadores opener for both teams.

Monterrey were not up for Sao Paulo's Copa Libertadores challenge on Wednesday and fell to the Brazilian powers by 2-0 in Brazil.

Sao Paulo scored goals on either side of halftime and slowed down the visiting Mexicans.

Monterrey did not have their full roster available, as the club will play Tigres in the Clasico Regiomontano on the weekend. The starting lineup lacked talents such as Aldo De Nigris, Walter Ayovi and Jose Maria Basanta as manager Victor Manuel Vucetich opted for players like Eduardo Guevara, Jesus Arellano and Val Baiano instead.

Monterrey tried to attack Sao Paulo early on and didn't back down from the hosts but in the 12th minute Monterrey learned first-hand how quick Sao Paulo's attack could be. Marcelo Dos Santos sent the ball to the left side of the field to Jorge Wagner, who immediately sent the ball to the front of the goal to Washington. Monterrey's Diego Cervantes was no match and could not prevent Washington from knocking the ball into the back of the net.

The second goal was also product of quick passing. Wagner headed a corner kick from the edge of the six-yard box to the back post, where Washington easily tapped the ball into an empty net.

Monterrey had no response for Sao Paulo and quietly closed out their first game of Copa Libertadores without a goal.
