Two penalties defined the match between Toluca and Monterrey as the sides drew even.
By Sylvestre Adame
Toluca is yet to see a single victory this season.
First Half
Toluca would start off strong at home. Los Diablos attacked early with strikes from Antonio Naelson “Zinha.” Jonathan Orozco was alert for Monterrey as he stopped every shot from the talented midfielder.
Monterrey started to cut off Toluca’s attacks and the balance of the game was split down the middle.
Neither side was able to get any shots on target but things would change in the 26th minute.
Zinha crossed the ball into the Monterrey box. Luis Perez got a hand to the ball and the official called a penalty. Zinha took the shot and beat Orozco to the right post. Toluca went up 1-0.
Toluca gained confidence with the goal and Zinha almost struck again in the 34th minute. Zinha hit the ball off a quick bounce but Orozco was able to stop the blistering shot.
Zinha orchestrated the Toluca attack well. Monterrey had very little offensively and the half ended with Toluca in front, 1-0.
Second Half
Toluca once more started strong. This time their Colombian striker, Vladimir Marin, became the most dangerous man. Marin sent in a blazing shot in the 49th minute but it went just wide of the mark.
Monterrey woke up with Marin’s warning shot. Monterrey saw their best chance come in the 53rd minute. Sergio Santana played the ball inside of Toluca’s box before crossing it to Aldo De Nigris. De Nigris tapped the ball towards goal but it ended in the hands of Alfredo Talavera.
Monterrey had another slip away in the 54th minute. Luis Perez connected nicely with De Nigris to beat the Toluca defense. Perez sent in his attempt from the right side of the box but Diego Novaretti blocked the shot.
Toluca’s attack seemed to completely fade while Monterrey tried to pull even.
Los Rayados would get a golden chance to tie in the 64th minute. Dario Carreño fell inside of Toluca’s box and the referee called the foul. Luis Perez took the shot but missed it wide. Fortunately for Monterrey, the referee replayed the penalty because he ruled that Talavera had come off his line. Perez shot it once more and buried his second attempt. The game was tied at one apiece.
Both sides looked content with the tie as they did very little in attack after that.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
