Santos Strike Late, Topple Cruz Azul
Santos scored two late goals and beat Cruz Azul in Estadio Azul.
Santos Laguna scored twice in the final half hour to beat Cruz Azul a 2-0 setback. Carlos Darwin Quintero and Matias Vuoso did the damage for Santos, who improved to 2-1-1 and sit atop Group 3 with seven points.
Cruz Azul, meanwhile, are now in the midst of a three-game winless streak and have a 1-2-1 mark.
Christian Gimenez has thus far not found much of a spark with Cruz Azul. Gimenez had a clear chance to score his first goal in a Cruz Azul uniform but blasted a close-range shot wide of the goal.
Oswaldo Sanchez kept Cruz Azul scoreless in the 31st minute when he turned away Gerardo Torrado from close range. Jaime Lozano sent a ball in to Torrado on the far post and Torrado did well to control the ball and fire a shot on goal, but Sanchez did well to turn Torrado away.
Santos finally struck in the 68th minute. Oribe Peralta sent a ball in to Quintero, who could not hit the ball cleanly but got enough to redirect it past Jose de Jesus Corona.
Cruz Azul had a pair of shots in the next several minutes to try and equalize but neither Lozano nor Javier Orozco could place shots on goal from close range.
Vuoso scored in the 84th minute to put the game away. Vuoso dribbled the ball into the penalty area and slipped a shot past Corona.
