Estudiantes' Herrera: Poor Finishing Too Much To Overcome
Estudiantes' Miguel Herrera said his club could have played three more hours and would not have scored more than the one goal they got.
Peruvian side Juan Aurich made sure of that.
Juan Aurich beat Estudiantes Tecos 2-1 in Zapopan, Mexico, on Wednesday and claimed a spot in the tournament proper with a 4-1 aggregate victory.
Estudiantes manager Miguel Herrera blamed the loss on his team's inability to score.
"The truth is that (Wednesday) we could have played another three hours and the ball was not going to go in," Herrera said in a post-match press conference. "There are games like that, days like that but the team made the effort."
Always one to criticize the officiating, Herrera was no different after this latest setback.
"There were two clear penalties - one in Chiclayo (Peru) and the other here, that the referees were never going to call," Herrera said.
Weather also played a role in Wednesday's loss, Herrera said. A steady downpour has pelted the Guadalajara area and the field showed some wear and tear because of it.
"Unfortunately, the team found itself in this type of weather," Herrera said. "It's been raining nonstop for three days and the field did not allow us to play the type of football we like to play, but the effort was still there."
Estudiantes and Juan Aurich were scoreless until just before halftime, when Juan Aurich's Luis Tejada scored his third goal of the series.
Ricardo Ciciliano scored in the 73rd minute to put the series away.
Estudiantes' lone tally of the series came in the 75th minute when Fredy Bareiro scored but it was not nearly enough.
