Salvador Cabañas Alert And Taking Food
The Paraguayan looks to be beyond danger.
By Cyrus C. Malek
The Paraguayan's situation looked grave as fluid began to build up in his brain last week, but the player is now alert and taking food orally. His first word was "Ipora", a word in his native guarani that means "I am well."
"He recognises people perfectly well and is very animated. He has made it his goal to recover quickly and there will be time later for you all [the press] to speak with him," said Cabañas' doctor Adolfo Diaz.
However, the player still has no memory of his life-threatening incident, a common occurence when one suffers such trauma.
This past weekend, Club America beat Indios 1-0 and dedicated the victory to Cabañas with a variety of symbolic gestures at Estadio Azteca. The team came out of the tunnel wearing shirts that featured the player's number 10 and a message of support, Cabañas' shirt was spread over a chair on the bench, and the team even went so far as to start playing the match with 10 men, with the 11th man entering the pitch a few minutes after the opening whistle.
