Chicharo Leads Chivas Back In Win Over Estudiantes

Javier "Chicharo" Hernandez scored two goals to give Chivas a stunning 3-2 win over crosstown rivals Estudiantes.

Chivas hosted Estudiantes in the Jornada 3 of the Mexican Bicentenario 2010 hoping to extend their winning streak to a third game. Three goals in less than 10 minutes eventually gave Chivas a 3-2 win to continue their record, while Estudiantes gave away the lead obtained early on and continued their three-game losing streak. 

First Half

Early in the third minute Chivas came close to opening the scoring with a corner kick that was almost headed in by Hector Reynoso but ended up going wide. 

Estudiantes opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a cross from the left from Rubens Sambueza for ‘Pony’ Ruiz. Ruiz received the pass in front of goal, and Chivas captain and goalkeeper was unable to do much after being left on the ground. Ruiz then put the ball into the net to give Estudiantes the early 1-0 lead. 

In the 32nd minute Estudiantes had an opportunity to double their lead. Fredy Bareiro headed the ball towards goal on a corner, but Luis Michel was able to control the ball.  

Second Half

Back for the second half it was Estudiantes who once again were able to put the ball into the back of the net. ‘Pony’ Ruiz sent in a cross for Fredy Bareiro who was able to head the ball down into the net to double the lead in the 61st minute.  


Chivas cut the lead in half in the 78th minute. ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez took control of the right side of the field and sent in the ball for Alberto ‘Venado’ Medina. ‘Venado’ received the ball in front of goal after the Estudiantes goalkeeper had sent it towards a different path. Medina and pushed it in toward the roof of the goal to make the score 1-2.

Two minutes later, in the 80th minute, ‘Chicharo’ scored the equalizer for Chivas. Hernandez received the ball at the edge of the area from ‘Bofo‘ Bautista, turned, and sent the shot with his left foot shaking off ‘Tepa’ Jimenez to give Chivas the 2-2 score. The long range effort went in and gave Chivas hope to win the game. 

In the 84th minute ‘Chicharito’ once again added a goal to save Chivas. ‘Chicharo’ received on the left side of the field, and sent in another long ranged effort that rushed past Rodriguez to give Chivas the 3-2 advantage. 

Chivas came close to adding a fourth goal near the end of the game. Again, Medina took control over the right side of the field and sent the ball to ‘Chicharito.’ The Mexican-leading goal scorer’s effort was blocked, but his performance was enough to give Chivas all three points and an extended winning streak.
