Familiarity With Cruz Azul's Tactics Propelled Monterrey To Win

Monterrey 'keeper Jonathan Orozco said his side was well-prepared for Cruz Azul.

Monterrey were able to defeat Cruz Azul twice in December to claim the Mexican league championship, and while that result did not factor into Saturday's game, the series helped Monterrey once again recapture their magic.

Monterrey beat Cruz Azul 2-0 in a Jornada 3 match, and goalkeeper Jontahan Orozco said the familiarity Monterrey had with Cruz Azul was a factor in the match.

"We've played against them, we know how they play, their tactics, how (manager Enrique) Meza likes to play and we just try and do things the right way," Orozco told reporters after the match. "Things went well for us."

Orozco helped set up both goals with quick and timely passes. First, Orozco tossed a ball towards Walter Ayovi, who carried it into Cruz Azul territory and fed Nery Cordozo for a goal. Then, Orozco's booming goal kick found its way to Abraham Dario Carreño, who knocked a shot from outside the penalty area into the back of the net.

Orozco said his team was focused for the entire match.

"The way we were able to concentrate (was the key)," Orozco said. "We gave it 100 percent, were very well concentrated and tried to play the game our way, and we were able to do so."

Aldo De Nigris did not score in this match as he did in the final but he knocked Orozco's goal kick forward and towards Carreño's feet for the second goal of the game.

"It was obviously a tough match against a great team," Aldo De Nigris said. "We knew what it was going to be like but I believe we did well to maintain our order. We were concentrated for 90 minutes and did not make mistakes like last game, and that helped us get the win."
