Nearly one month after toppling Cruz Azul to win the Apertura 2009 championship, Monterrey sent some more damage Cruz Azul's way.

Monterrey scored a pair of second-half goals and beat Cruz Azul 2-0 in a Jornada 3 match in Monterrey on Saturday.

Monterrey claimed their second win of the season and now have six points while Cruz Azul suffered their first loss and sit on four points with a 1-1-1 record.

The match did not feature much attack in the early going, and in fact was scoreless well into the second half.

That was in stark contrast to the final, which featured a four-goal first half during the match at Estadio Tecnologico.

In the 61st minute, Monterrey finally broke through. Cruz Azul had an opportunity on a set piece as Jaime Lozano lifted a ball into the box from about 40 yards out. Goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco, though, leapt up and plucked the ball out of the air. With most of the players pushed into or near the penalty area, Orozco raced out and tossed the ball to Walter Ayovi's path. Ayovi sprinted the opposite way on a counterattack and slipped a ball to Nery Cardozo. With one touch, Cardozo evaded Jose de Jesus Corona, then knocked the ball past a pair of Cruz Azul defenders to give Monterrey a 1-0 lead.

Abraham Dario Carreño gave Monterrey a 2-0 lead 12 minutes later. Again, Orozco started the play off. With a thundering goal kick, Orozco nearly reached the opposing penalty area. Aldo De Nigris leapt and flicked the ball forward. Carreño trapped the ball and rifled a shot past Corona and into the back of the net.

Monterrey walked away the deserved winners while Cruz Azul again had no response for los Rayados' dominance.
