Morelia’s Two Enough Against America

Morelia’s two goals were enough to give them their first win in the Bicentenario.

Morelia got their first win of the season against a very tough America team. After having a great opening, America failed to score a single goal against the Monarcas. Miguel Sabah scored two times for Morelia.

This is now the 4th time America fails to win when Aquivaldo Mosquera is not in the line-up.

First Half

Morelia was in search of their first victory in the Bicentenario. America on the other hand wanted to start an early winning streak.

Morelia would get things started in the 4th minute. Luis Gabriel Rey drove through the left and got off a shot that just went wide.

America responded one minute later with Angel Reyna.  Reyna cut through the left and crossed his attempt. His shot also went wide of the mark.

America would get the first shot on goal in the 14th minute. Reyna pulled the trigger inside the box but Moises Muñoz was there to make the save.


The game was evenly played but America still created more danger.

Morelia’s first shot on goal would come in the 28th minute. Aldo Leao Tried his luck with a distant low driven shot. Guillermo Ochoa had no problems containing the ball.

The warning shot was not enough for America who conceded a goal in the 36th minute. Hugo Droguett crossed a low shot into the box. Miguel Sabah found the ball and tapped it in to give Morelia a 1-0 lead.

The game was slowly swaying in Morelia’s favor but the half ended before they could implement any further damage.

Second Half

America dominated possession to start the second half. Las Aguilas were getting good looks but couldn’t connect on any of them.

Although America created more, Morelia was the ones proposing dangerous plays.

Luis Gabriel Rey went in from the right and crossed his shot to the far post. Ochoa however, was well positioned and stopped the shot.

America had their chance in the 67th and 68th minute but again they missed wide. Angel Reyna tried it first but his shot went wide. Then Daniel Montenegro would receive for Enrique Esqueda but his shot had no direction.

Morelia had a great chance in the 83rd minute.  Miguel Sabah entered the box from the right side and blasted a low shot towards goal. The shot hit the base of the post as Morelia missed the chance to go further ahead.

America would fall further behind in the 94th minute. Pavel Pardo brought down Miguel Sabah inside the box and a penalty was called. Miguel Sabah took it and buried it to seal it for Morelia, 2-0.
