Monterrey Open Defense Of Their Title With Rout
Indios were no match for Monterrey as the Apertura 2009 champions demolished Indios 4-0.
Days after winning InterLiga and clinching a spot in Copa Libertadores, Monterrey set out to prove that neither that title nor the league championship were flukes, and Indios played the unfortunate role of the victims.
Hector Miguel Morales opened the scoring in the 19th minute. On a Monterrey corner kick, the ball settled in front of the goal. Osvaldo Martinez tried to get a foot to the ball but could not get it past a crowd of players. Eventually the ball bounced out and Morales ran onto it and knocked it on goal. It deflected off an Indios defender and settled into the back of the net as Monterrey took a 1-0 lead.
While that was the only goal Monterrey would need against Indios' meager and punchless attack, Aldo De Nigris doubled Monterrey's lead in the 38th minute. On another Monterrey corner kick, the ball bounced up for an opportunistic De Nigris. With Indios 'keeper Humberto Hernandez well off his line, De Nigris slammed the ball past Hernandez and gave Monterrey a 2-0 edge moments before halftime.
Monterrey's Abraham Dario Carreño gave his club a 3-0 edge in the 76th minute when he buried a header off a cross from Martinez.
Juan Carlos Medina made it 4-0 when he slipped a ball past Hernandez in the 86th minute of play.
Monterrey thus not only began their title defense with a convincing win but settled any potential early fears that their offense would struggle without Humberto Suazo, who left the club in the offseason.
