CARSON, Calif. - In the Guadalajara metropolitan area, Chivas and Atlas battle for club supremacy while Estudiantes are typically mired somewhere on the outskirts, both literally and figuratively.

The club that is usually an afterthought in Mexico's second-largest city, however, took an important step towards prominence on Wednesday after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat Puebla 3-2 in an InterLiga match at Home Depot Center.

Estudiantes advanced to a playoff series against a South American club and will play in Copa Libertadores for the first time in its history with a victory in that series.

Such a scenario suits the club just fine, Rubens Sambueza said.

"We showed that Estudiantes is a great club and worthy of representing Mexico in an important tournament such as Copa Libertadores," Sambueza said after Estudiantes' triumph.

Estudiantes, who will meet Peruvian side Juan Aurich for the right to participate in Copa Libertadores, battled from behind after falling down 2-0 early in the second half.

It was the second consecutive time Estudiantes fell behind by two goals, and the second consecutive time the club overcame such a deficit.

"We never put our heads down and that's why we earned the win," Sambueza said. "Now, we are just 90 minutes away against Juan Aurich to assure ourselves of a spot in Libertadores."
