Togo Attacks No Cause For FMF To Fear For Tricolor's Safety

Mexican officials say the attacks on Togo's national team have not led to panic with the federation for Mexico's safety at the World Cup.

The African Cup of Nations has been marred by violence after the Togo national team's bus was fired upon, an incident that left four dead and left the squad shaken.

For Mexican Football Federation officials, the violence has not led to concerns over Mexico's safety come the World Cup in June.

"The situation with Togo doesn't worry us. We don't foresee any sorts of problems for us," FMF executive Nestor De La Torre said in a press conference. "We're going to South Africa in February for an event with FIFA and one of the themes will be safety."

Based on what the federation has seen, the Mexican national team will be as safe as possible in South Africa, De La Torre said.

"Truthfully, all that we've seen in South Africa has been positive with respect to the logistics, safetey, everything, but those acts have sounded an alarm within FIFA," De La Torre said. "We have to understand it and be aware that in the world, situations of this nature are occurring."

Mexico, who will play in the 2010 World Cup opener against South Africa on June 11, must do their part to ensure the safety of its team and its citizens, De La Torre said, as the responsibility to put together a safe and well-organized tournament does not fall solely on FIFA.

"In an international event, with everything FIFA has to contribute and invest in, we have to see what we can do to support, to have all the tranquility as possible not only for all the players but their families and every Mexican who goes over there," De La Torre said.
