De Nigris Longs For Mexico Duty

Turkey-based striker Antonio De Nigris could be the solution to Mexico's scoring woes, if he receives a call-up.

Mexican forward Antonio De Nigris is hoping for a call-up to the Mexican national team ahead of El Tri's World Cup qualifier on March 28.

De Nigris, who plies his trade with Ankaragucu of the Turkish league, has not been called up by Sven-Goran Eriksson despite the lack of production by forwards under the Swede.

"I continue to work hard in hopes of joining the national team," De Nigris said. "I've been close but nothing has been definitive as of yet."

De Nigris scored a goal on the weekend in a 3-1 win over Hacettepespor. The well-traveled De Nigris has been close to reaching the national team but his patience is wearing thin.

"I've been on a lot of the preliminary lists but I'm not waiting for those anymore, I want the official call," De Nigris said. "I am working towards that and hopefully it will come. I will continue to put in the proper work over here and when I get the call I will be prepared to help the national team."

In 2001, De Nigris scored a spectacular goal in a 3-3 friendly draw against Brazil. The goal seemingly stamped his presence with the national team but De Nigris has not been a regular contributor on the national team during his career. However, De Nigris' club standing is not to blame.

"I feel fine and am very happy," he said. "The coach has confidence in me and I respond with good games and goals. The team is doing things well. We are fighting, working well in games, are concentrated and hopefully we can continue that way."
