Estudiantes Owner Hoping For Stronger Club Image
Estudiantes Tecos rebranded from Tecos UAG but had similarly negative results to what the old checkered club were accustomed to obtaining.
Situated in the suburb of Zapopan, Tecos UAG were not very successful in drawing supporters or winning games.
Before the Apertura 2009 season, Tecos UAG attempted to change their image. The club had done well in the Clausura '09 season as Tecos reached the Liguilla and gave hope that continued success was on the way.
Then, the club rebranded, adopting the name Estudiantes Tecos and changed their colors as well. And while the club was successful in putting out a new-look team, things went the same as they'd always gone on the field.
Estudiantes Tecos missed the playoffs, having compiled a 5-7-5 record.
And while the club made progress on one end, success on the field is necessary to keep things moving in the same direction.
"We launched a new image of the club and I believe it was positive," Owner Antonio Leaño told Mural. "We've invested in the stadium, and all that made us have some record crowds in the opening games (of the Apertura), crowds that we did not have when we were in contention for the superlider or when we were champions (in 1994). We want to conserve our image but it has to be accompanied by results."
Estudiantes have done some off-the-field work to help benefit the club economically. While the initial support the club enjoyed died down, Leaño said an upgraded Estadio 3 de Marzo and some strong financial alliances could help the club in the stands.
"The alliances have become stronger and soon we'll have something for the stadium, some sort of upgrade," he said. "It's a question of getting in some sponsors who will be able to draw more supporters and help give us the stability we've been looking for."
Estudiantes might contend on two fronts in 2010. While the club will try and return to the Liguilla, Leaño also has his sights set on South America. Estudiantes will participate in InterLiga 2010 and the owner has made it a goal to reach Copa Libertadores by finishing in the top two of InterLiga.
"We've discussed that with the players and obviously there is something (a prize) for them in case they achieve the goals," Leaño said. "We also have to think about strenghtening the club a bit because being in two competitions can be taxing on certain positions."
