Sanchez Hoping For Tricolor Return

Oswaldo Sanchez has not been a part of Mexico since Javier Aguirre took over in April, but the veteran 'keeper has not given up his dreams of another World Cup.

At 36-years-old Oswaldo Sanchez still has hopes of attending the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. The goalkeeper has not featured in Javier Aguirre’s recent plans, but says that he is ready to jump into action if called upon. All he can do now is wait and support the Mexican national team.

Sanchez featured prominently in Germany for the World Cup in 2006 after previously going along for the ride for France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002. He now hopes for a trip to South Africa.

“I was able to go to three World Cups and I have hopes of going to a fourth. With good performances it’s possible. My job is to work for a call-up and for now just support those that are there [on the national team] with the hope of that when it’s your turn you’ll receive the same support,” Sanchez said during a conference call.

Current manager Javier Aguirre called up Sanchez for Korea/Japan 2002 but the goalkeeper has not been a part of the manager’s plans in the current cycle. According to the player there was no fall-out between the two, but there hasn’t been any communication either.

“I was in the group that went to the Korea/Japan World Cup in 2002. Since then we haven’t spoken. We have a relationship of mutual respect. I admire him because of what he’s achieved as a manager and he’s doing important things. We’ve never had any type of problems.”

All the goalkeeper can do is work and support the national team as he waits for a call-up.

“As a Mexican player you have to support the national team. When you don’t play and don’t support, that’s being selfish; I’m not a selfish person. I’ll work and be ready to play or whatever is required,” added the Santos player.

“I’m just one more of the 17 goalkeepers, I have to work to earn a place just like everyone else. Whether I’m called or not does not depend on me. What corresponds to me is to give my support and not criticize  other people.”
