Monterrey's De Nigris: My Brother Is Here With Me

Aldo De Nigris scored two goals on Thursday and said his late brother Antonio is giving him strength.

Since his brother Antonio died late last month, Monterrey forward Aldo De Nigris has had to deal with a lot.

The shocking death was a blow to the entire Mexican footballing community, and De Nigris seemed to be the focal point of the suffering. Couple that with the pressure he would have faced regardless, for being a key part of Monterrey's attack, and De Nigris was seemingly in for a long battle anyway.

Now, after three postseason games, De Nigris is showing he knows how to deal with the toughest of adversities. De Nigris scored both goals in Monterrey's 2-0 win over Toluca and has the club within one game of the final.

De Nigris said he knows why he's been able to find the back of the net.

"I know that I have my brother here with me, by my side," De Nigris told Mexican daily Record after the match. "He is giving me strength, and I will have him here the rest of my life."

Monterrey have now scored four goals in the Liguilla, and De Nigris has accounted for three of them. He has scored all of his goals at home, in shutout victories, against teams who were favored to win the series.

Toluca are not done, of course. There is the matter of Sunday's game still to be dealt with. But De Nigris' focus and concentration have given Monterrey a clear advantage entering the game.

"The team played well. We had to be patient but we played very well," De Nigris said. "It's a good advantage but not definitive because they will give us everything they have at their house."

De Nigris said his side could have made it an even wider margin of victory. But even though the third goal never came, the manner in which Monterrey fought for it gives De Nigris plenty of confidence entering Sunday's decisive leg.

"We had enough to get the third goal but we just couldn't finish," De Nigris said. "But we had enough to have widened our lead. We played better but there are still 90 minutes left. We just need to keep playing how we've been playing, nothing more. Keep on with the same humility and work hard for 90 minutes."
