Morelia's Sabah Not Concerned About His Azul Past
Miguel Sabah and Cruz Azul did not part amicably, but the player claimed that would not be a motivating factor when Morelia play la Maquina.
But he wasn't always such a key player. In fact, he was deemed expendable by Cruz Azul not too long ago.
Sabah, who will play against Cruz Azul in the Apertura 2009 semifinals, admitted fear once as a member of la Maquina.
After a 2-0 loss to America on Sept. 28, 2008, Sabah tore into his club's performance.
"We were a disaster," Sabah said after the match. "We were not the team we have been. We were scared and what happened, happened."
Now, Sabah said that was what prompted his exit from Cruz Azul.
"I had a difficult time with Cruz Azul," Sabah told Mexican daily Esto. "It was more difficult to face what I had to after my unfortunate statement. That had a lot of influence in my leaving the team. The front office allowed to be influenced by everything the press said."
Having had time to reflect on his time with Cruz Azul and the way he said he was run out of town, Sabah is still not necessarily interested in payback for those reasons.
"I was disappointed when I left the club and the way I was treated after that statement," Sabah said. "Honestly, that is something I'd rather not think about, that doesn't interest me to recall. Neither am I worried too much about how I'm treated when I return to Estadio Azul. The statistics are there and I'm fine. I always gave the best I had."
With Cruz Azul, Sabah scored 42 goals over six seasons with la Maquina. He led the club to the finals in the Clausura '08 and Apertura '08 seasons but was sent to Morelia following the Apertura loss to Toluca.
He scored 11 goals with Morelia in his first season with the club and was tied for the team lead with goals this season.
Still, Sabah is after a slight bit of revenge. Cruz Azul visited Estadio Morelos during the regular season and left with a 3-0 win. The game was the only time Morelia lost at home this season, and Sabah and his teammates remember.
"This is our revenge," Sabah said. "We want to take advantage of it."
