Toluca Ready For Monterrey's Challenge

Toluca manager Jose Manuel De La Torre said his squad is playing tough and ready for whatever Monterrey have to offer.

Toluca survived a scare from San Luis in the quarterfinal round of the Apertura 2009 Liguilla but now the team must quickly turn around and prepare for Monterrey.

Estadio Tecnologico was unkind to Toluca during the regular season as it was site of the club's only goal-less effort until the first game of the postseason.

Still, Toluca manager Jose Manuel De La Torre is undeterred.

"For the moment, the idea we have is to go to Monterrey with the intention of obtaining a good result by playing our best football," De La Torre said after Toluca's win over San Luis on Sunday. "We need to analyze our rival well and plan the best method in order to obtain the result."

Monterrey will try and play the role of unkind hosts. In August, Monterrey beat Toluca 1-0 at home, the only time Toluca were shut out during the regular season.

Toluca, though, overcame some adversity against San Luis and finished their series tied 1-1. That Toluca struggled to score, though, was not much of an issue for De La Torre.

"We are in the semifinals and I think the team looks strong," he said. "Against San Luis we had to win and we reached that objective. Now things are different and we'll put forth our best effort against Monterrey, who will be just as difficult as San Luis even though they are different teams."

Toluca have their sights set on much greater things than beating Monterrey in the playoffs. However, such a step is an important one for los Diablos Rojos, who won the league title in the Apertura 2008 season.

"We're going step by step in search of a championship," De La Torre said. "We are in the semifinals now and that's the most important thing, so we'll be putting on our full attention on Monterrey."
