Cruz Azul Tout Preparedness In Triumph Over Puebla
Cruz Azul are prepared for whatever obstacles come their way, manager Enrique Meza said.
After a dismal campaign last season, Cruz Azul are ready to take another step in trying to snap their skid. Cruz Azul beat Puebla 3-2 on Saturday and reached their third semifinal in the last four season.
Cruz Azul manager Enrique Meza said the team has responded well to their own responsibilities.
"This group needs to do things right, and is prepared to do them," Meza said in a post-game press conference. "There is a level of concentration, of work. I see their desire."
La Maquina jumped out ahead of Puebla on Saturday, taking a 2-1 lead at halftime, and a 3-1 lead early in the second half. Players are resilient and willing to put in the work that is required to be successful, Meza said.
"At the start I saw them without expressions, with a certain level of skepticism," Meza said. "Now, I see them having adopted an idea of how they want to play and they are applying it."
If there was any negatives, it was Puebla's ability to find the back of the net. Puebla scored four first-half goals in the first leg and added another pair of goals in the decisive second leg. Cruz Azul thus allowed six goals in the series.
Some of those defensive failures, though, can be attributed to the opponent.
"At the end of the day, we worked hard, are trying to do things right but the rival must also be taken into account."
Cruz Azul now will await Sunday's results to meet their next opponent. That the club has another obstacle to face keeps things in perspective for Meza.
"I don't think there is anything to celebrate yet," Meza said. "I can't jump or run because I'll fall apart. It's not a joke - I'm 61 years old."
