America was forced to make two goals in order to go through to the Liguilla semifinals but came just shy of that as America and Monterrey tied 1-1 on Saturday. The result sends Monterrey through to the semifinals and ends America's season.

America was able to get one in but so did Monterrey, which meant that Los Rayados go through thanks to their one goal advantage.  America scored off a penalty in the first half. Monterrey responded well and tied things up thanks to Humberto Suazo. America tried frantically to tie the game but it wouldn’t be enough. One goal marked the difference as Monterrey advance to the semifinal round.

Monterrey will have to wait on Sunday’s result to know who their opponent will be.

First Half

With the one goal disadvantage America was forced to go on the attack and that’s just what they did.

America seemed to be headed in the right direction in the 4th minute. Juan Carlos Valenzuela threw in header form point blank range but Jonathan Orozco was there to make the save.

America looked keen on attack while Monterrey seemed happy with their one goal lead.

Daniel Montenegro had America’s second chance of the night in the 10th minute. Montenegro drove in from the right and crossed his shot against Orozco. The ball went inches wide as America came close once again.

America was insistent but nothing would fall.

Salvador Cabañas tried it from long distance in the 17th minute.  Cabañas shot it but Orozco measured it the whole way.

Monterrey only settled for long range shots but those were not enough to trouble Guillermo Ochoa.

Pavel Pardo got in on the action for America in the 32nd minute. Pardo entered Monterrey’s box from the right side. With a man on Pardo was able to get the shot off. Orozco was well positioned and impeded the ball from going in.

Monterrey was finally able to create something in the 34th minute. Humberto Suazo tried a mid range shot that looked dangerous but Ochoa saw it coming the whole way.

The half was coming to a close and America would not go empty handed.

A hand ball inside the box was called on Aldo de Nigris and a penalty was awarded to America. Salvador Cabañas took the shot and beat Orozco down the middle. America went ahead 1-0 and tied things 1-1 on aggregate.

Second Half

Monterrey kick started their attack for the second half

Osvaldo Martinez had the best opportunity of the night for Monterrey.  Martinez got behind the America defense and had the goal along with Guillermo Ochoa in front of him. Ochoa came out but Martinez sneaked the ball through which hit the base of the post. Aquivaldo Mosquera cleared the ball and the score remained the same.

America did not let down in the attack.

Salvador Cabañas had the go ahead goal on two occasions. The first one came in the 60th minute. Cabañas had a clear shot on goal from the top of the box but opted to kick it with no power and Orozco made the easy save. Cabañas would miss again just four minutes later. Las Aguilas broke in a counter attack with Montenegro and Cabañas. “Rolfi” gave a beautiful pass to Cabañas who had no one but the keeper and the net in front of him. Cabañas shot it but Orozco stopped it with his leg.

Monterrey nearly hurt themselves in the 77th minute. Daniel Montenegro had a go from the top of the box. His shot was deflected and almost went in.

Monterrey responded with a great play from Abraham Dario Carreño. Aldo de Nigris controlled the ball inside of the America box and found Carreño with space. Carreño chested the ball and without letting the ball drop tried an overhead kick that went just wide of the mark.

Monterrey saw greater possession as the game drew nearer and nearer to a close.

Monterrey finally got the goal they were looking for in the 79th minute. Aldo de Nigris headed the ball towards goal and it looked like Ochoa would have a fairly easy save. The ball was cut off before it reached Ochoa by none other than “El Chupete” Suazo. Suazo then had a simple tap in to tie things up and send Monterrey ahead on aggregate.

Things would get worse for America as Jesus Ramirez was thrown out of the game in the 83rd minute.

America unleashed an onslaught of shots on the Monterrey but Orozco stopped them all.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie but Monterrey goes through with a 2-1 aggregate score.
