Cruz Azul Motivated To End Chivas' Season
If Cruz Azul beats Chivas at Estadio Jalisco on Saturday, el Rebaño would be ousted from playoff contention; such a scenario pleases Cruz Azul's Rogelio Chavez.
But don't count on la Maquina doing any favors for el Rebaño.
"Our mission is to pull out a win," Cruz Azul's Rogelio Chavez said in a press conference.
In fact, not only do Cruz Azul want to win for the sake of winning but the club wants to deal a death blow to Guadalajara.
"It is motivating to leave out a club as big as Chivas," Chavez said. "It does motivate you more but we aren't worried about them but rather what we can achieve as a group."
Cruz Azul clinched the Group 3 title and have an outside shot of finishing with the most points in the league. For that to happen, Cruz Azul would have to beat Chivas while Morelia and Toluca would have to lose to or tie Monterrey and Puebla, respectively. Morelia and Toluca enter the weekend on 32 points, two ahead of Cruz Azul, but la Maquina have a plus-15 goal differential, one behind Morelia and four better than Toluca.
Also helping keep Cruz Azul motivated is their three-game winning streak. Cruz Azul beat Atlante and Pachuca by identical 3-1 scores and trounced Puebla by 4-0 a week ago in their regular-season home finale.
Facing Chivas in Estadio Jalisco, Cruz Azul don't want to take a step back entering the playoffs.
"The team has been trying to play the way Profe (Enrique) Meza wants but we know that there are games in which we lose because we are distracted," Chavez said. "We've worked on that and now we have won three games in a row. Because of that we need to look for three points in Guadalajara."
