San Luis kept pace ahead of a hard-charging Chivas squad and beat Santos 4-2 in Estadio Alfonso Lastras on Saturday.
The win gave San Luis 21 points in Group 1 and assured the club that it would hold its own destiny going into the final weekend of the season. If San Luis can beat Queretaro in the final game of the year, San Luis will qualify to the Liguilla on 24 points as the second place team in Group 2.
Santos, meanwhile, were routed but still qualified to the Liguilla. Atlante's 4-0 loss to Tigres was enough for Santos to gain entry into the postseason as Santos can finish no worse than second place in Group 3.
Santos opened the scoring just three minutes in. On a counterattack, Darwin Quintero found Vuoso inside the box on the final pass and Vuoso buried his attempt.
But San Luis managed a quick response. Ignacio Torres sent in a shot from the left side that was not too potent but Santos' Oswaldo Sanchez left a rebound nonetheless and Moreno scored the equalizer.
In the 26th minute, Moreno put San Luis ahead 2-1. Tressor Moreno fired twice on Sanchez but both times the former national team 'keeper made saves. On the second attempt, the ball bounced out to Alfredo Moreno, who was able to score on an open goal.
The score remained 2-1 until Quintero equalized with a half-hour remaining. Quintero and Vuoso once again combined for a goal. Quintero raced into the area from the right side and fed Vuoso, who hit a backheel immediately back towards Quintero. The speedy Quintero raced past the defense and easily scored the equalizer.
Braulio Luna and Cesar Gonzalez also paired up for a goal, this one the eventual game-winner. Luna and Gonzalez had a quick give and go, and Luna wound up with the ball on the left side of the box and beat Sanchez.
Two minutes later, Moreno completed his hat trick. Moreno ripped a shot from outside of the box past Sanchez and San Luis held on to their convincing victory.
