Meza Content After Winning In Return To Hidalgo
Enrique Meza and victory in Estadio Hidalgo is nothing new, but his latest win there was.
Meza's Cruz Azul side thumped Pachuca by a 3-1 score in Hidalgo on Wednesday as Meza returned to his former stomping grounds for the first time since leaving the club to take over the reins with Cruz Azul.
For Meza, who returned home a conquering hero, the win was grand in several ways.
"I have many friends here," Meza said at a post-game press conference. "The people here have always treated me great. The supporters were also behind us always and helped us achieve many great things. I respect the players a great deal and I am grateful for the work they put in during the time I was here."
Meza led Pachuca to several championships during his time with Pachuca, including the Clausura 2007 title, the club's fifth Primera Division crown. Meza also took Pachuca to the Clausura 2009 final but the club lost to Pumas.
But all that is in the past for Meza, who said his team's win on Wednesday was a fantastic result as they fight for a playoff spot.
"We pulled out a great result," Meza said. "Hopefully everything else comes together. We've gotten a lot closer but mathematically we still have to wait. It would have been great if we could have gotten what we wanted to (Wednesday)."
Atlante beat Toluca to stay within range of Cruz Azul. Atlante could still overtake Cruz Azul in the Group 3 table. However, Santos fell to Monterrey, which helped la Maquina take over the top spot in the Group 3 table. Cruz Azul have 27 points, Santos are on 26 and Atlante have 22.
For Meza, that the team is playing well is sufficient enough, however.
"We've been progressing and we have two games left to try and fix the things we don't do well," Meza said. "But we need to improve everywhere."
