Santos Bid Farewell To Estadio Corona With Draw
Vicente Matias Vuoso scored a goal in the second half as Santos overcame an early deficit and tied 1-1 against Pumas in the last match ever at Estadio Corona.
The last game in Estadio Corona history produced many memorable and emotional moments - one of the final ones Vuoso's electric goal and ensuing celebration - but it also helped Santos maintain their lead in Group 3. However, the club lost two points on Cruz Azul and now lead la Maquina by just a pair of points.
Early on, though, it looked like Pumas would spoil Corona's send-off match.
Pablo Barrera opened the scoring just 10 minutes in. Francisco Palencia slipped into the penalty area down the left side and sent the ball to the top of the box. Barrera sent a left-footed shot from 18 yards out past a diving Oswaldo Sanchez and into the back of the net.
Pumas continued to pressure Santos' goal but Sanchez did well to knock their attempts away. Palencia nearly got one past Sanchez early in the second half but a diving save by the veteran 'keeper kept the ball out of the net.
Pumas threatened to notch a win in the last match at Estadio Corona until the 66th minute. Darwin Quintero started the sequence from the right side of the box as he ripped a shot on goal. Pumas' Sergio Bernal dived and made the save but left the rebound in front of the net. Vuoso ran onto it, collected and easily sent it into an open net.
With a packed house and numerous former Santos luminaries, the match closed out with a deserved point for the hosts, who will move into the swanky new Territorio Santos Modelo.
