Toluca Get Back On Track With Win Over Queretaro
Toluca scored two goals in the last half hour in a 2-0 win over Queretaro on Sunday.
Queretaro made things easier for the hosts as the club finished the game with 10 men.
With the win, Toluca maintained the top spot in the overall table as the club is superlider by one point over Morelia.
Gallos Blancos, meanwhile, watched their own three-match unbeaten streak come to an end under sunny skies in Toluca.
As expected, the visitors managed to put little pressure on the Toluca goal, mustering only a pair of half-chances in the first half. Margarito Gonzalez's 30th-minute free kick was Queretaro's most dangerous early attempt.
Toluca, meanwhile, controlled the match but coudl not break down Queretaro's defense. It was not until the 59th minute that the club got help from Queretaro, but even then Toluca could not score. Jair Maldonado was sent off just before the hour when he took down Hector Raul Mancilla inside the box. The Chilean took the penalty himself but Queretaro 'keeper Bossio dived and made the save.
Queretaro seemed to have gotten a break but the club made it last only five minutes. Carlos Esquivel ripped a left-footed shot from outside the bos into the back of the net to give Toluca the lead.
With a 1-0 lead and a man advantage, Toluca gained confidence and were able to put the game away in the 80th minute. Antonio Naelson "Zinha" had nearly a repeat of Esquivel's goal as he too scored on a long-range shot.
Toluca have 29 points and a comfortable grip on Group 1 while the top spot in the playoffs and home-field advantage throughout the postseason is theirs to lose.
