Days after Mexico were scorched by a goalkeeping mistake, El Tri took full advantage of one as their Under-17 World Cup campaign was steered back on course.

Miguel Basulto scored in the 70th minute to give Mexico a 1-0 win over Brazil. Mexico now have three points in Group B and have bottom-feeder Japan remaining. Japan have no points through two games.

Mexico, however, remain in third place after the day's games. Switzerland remain top of the group after beating Japan 4-3 while Brazil have three points on the strength of their win over Japan.

Mexico, who lost 2-0 to Switzerland on Saturday, are behind Brazil on goal differential.

The win came four years after Mexico's Under-17 squad beat Brazil in the 2005 U-17 World Cup, then called the U-17 World Championship. This was their first meeting at this level since, and El Tri once again got the better of Brazil.

From the onset of Tuesday's match, Mexico were in control of the match. Each team tested the opposing goal but it was Mexico who were closest. Abraham Coronado got around a Brazilian defender and ripped a shot from 27 yards out only to see it sail over the crossbar.

Brazil tried to make a go of it with long-range shots in the second half as well but were unable to place any shots on frame.

It wasn't until the 70th minute that Mexico finally broke through. Gil Corder swung a corner kick from the left corner into the center of the six-yard box. Brazilian keeper Ramses dropped to his knees in an attempt to get the ball but instead saw it bounce away from him. A Brazilian defender left the far post and tried to reach the ball but Basulto was there first. Basulto slotted the ball into the back of the net to give El Tri a deserved lead.

Mexico were able to hang onto the advantage without much problems from the Brazilians, who never recovered from Basulto's tally.
