America Takes El Super Clasico Over Chivas

America wins Super Clasico with a lone goal from Aquivaldo Mosquera.

America had not seen a victory against their arch rivals Chivas since the Apertura 2007. Chivas' dominance ended tonight, though, as America took the Super Clasico with a 1-0 scoreline.

The only goal of the night came from the Colombian defender Aquivaldo Mosquera. Las Aguilas had a superior advantage in the air but only made the best of it one time. Luis Ernesto Michel kept Guadalajara within range thanks to his plethora of saves. One goal was enough in the end as America take the bragging rights and, more importantly, take the three points.

Americas win and Monterrey's loss means that Las Aguilas take control of the second spot in group 2 with 25 points.

Chivas could have taken the second spot in group one but their loss leaves them in third place with 15 points.

First Half

With Chivas enjoying the best in the previous Clasico encounters, America came out with a vengeance.

Las Aguilas opened up the score after only three minutes of play. Aquivaldo Mosquera drove in the first goal after getting his head behind a Pavel Pardo free kick. Mosquera rose above everyone and beat  Luis Ernesto Michel on the right post. America took an early 1-0 lead thanks to the Colombian defender.

America looked to impose their will at home but Chivas held strong, trying to exploit the wings with their speed.

Las Aguilas once again used set plays to their advantage in the 18th minute. Pavel Pardo took a corner kick which found the head of Salvador Cabañas. Cabañas sent the ball towards goal but Edgar "El Tepa" Solis saved Chivas off the line.

America won everything in the air, so Chivas' Raul Arias made a 23rd minute change for Solis who looked bound to get a red card otherwise.

Chivas' first sign of warning did not come until the 28th minute. There was a scramble inside of the America box after a corner. A shot was fired from point blank distance but the America defense impeded the ball from traveling beyond the goal line.

Chivas tried to get the offense going, but America was still wreaking havoc on the other side of the pitch.

Las Aguilas again showed their dominance in the air after Juan Carlos Valenzuela got a header in from a corner kick. Luckily for Chivas, Michel was in the right place to make the save. Just two minutes later, in the 34th, Enrique Esqueda nutmegged a Chivas defender which gave him the space to run the wing. Esqueda crossed the ball over to Angel Reyna, who shot at goal but the Guadalajara defense cleared.

Las Aguilas had one more play before the half ended.

Angel Reyna nearly sent America further ahead after he exploited Chivas' weakness once again. Reyna won the ball in the air and put in a good shot, but Michel kept it out with an outstanding save. The half ended with the 1-0 result favoring the home side.

Second Half

America came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half.

Las Aguilas tested from long distance this time. Cabañas tried it first with his shot going straight to Michel's hands. Esqueda tried his luck one minute later as his long distance shot bounced, forcing Michel to sent the ball out to corner.

Despite America's early efforts, Chivas made a few changes and controlled the ball more.

Javier Hernandez had a golden chance to give his side the tying goal in the 53rd minute. Xavier Ivan Baez crossed a perfect ball over to "Chicharito." Hernandez gave it a go and the ball looked destined to score, but Mosquera threw himself at it avoiding a possible tie.

The game was well played by both sides with Chivas attacking and America waiting to strike from a counter.

Angel Reyna had a chance for America's second in the 59th minute but Michel saved the day once again. Reyna entered into the box from the left side and tried to take on the keeper. Michel stood his ground and suffocated Reyna until he got the ball away.

Daniel Montenegro wanted in on the action and had a string of shot's in the midway through the second half. His first shot came in the 66th minute. "Rolfi" tried form the right side of the box but his shot went straight to Michel. The second came in the 67th with a long distance shot which had nothing behind it and Michel had no problems controlling.  The third came one minute later. This time Montenegro received the ball inside the box with his back against the goal. Rolfi turned around and hit it hard, Michel got to it but had problems keeping the shot.

Chivas responded in the 72nd minute. Omar Bravo got into the box from the left and was left one on one with Guillermo Ochoa. It looked to be the first for Chivas but Ochoa blocked Bravos attempt.

The game started to slow with America controlling the tempo.

Salvador had an excellent play ruined by Michel in the 84th minute. Cabañas drove the ball down the heart of the field, beat three defenders before having a shot. His shot went straight to Michel who once again kept Chivas within reach.

America killed the ball as the game wore on and held on to win the Clasico, 1-0.
