Stoppage-Time Goal Helps Queretaro Stun Cruz Azul
Mauro Vila scored four minutes into stoppage time as Queretaro beat Cruz Azul 2-1 on Saturday.
Queretaro's win was just their third of the season as the club inched up to 12 points on the campaign. Meanwhile, the loss was a blow to Cruz Azul's hopes of winning Group 3. La Maquina find themselves four points back of Santos.
First Half
Cruz Azul had a pair of chances in the first 25 minutes to take an early lead but faltered on them. First, Jaime Lozano had a header attempt from six yards out in the 22nd minute but fired the ball right at Queretaro 'keeper Carlos Gustavo Bossio. Two minutes later, Lozano lined up a shot from the left corner of the box but sent it just wide of the right post.
Queretaro though went ahead in the scoreboard thanks to Isaac Romo. Jose Piña carried the ball down the left flank and dribbled into the penalty area. Piña lifted a ball to Romo, who jumped and knocked the header past Jose de Jesus Corona and into the back of Cruz Azul's net.
Near the end of the first half, Cruz Azul equalized on a bit of a fluke goal. Rogelio Chavez held the ball on the right side of the field and looked to cross the ball. He sent the ball towards the middle of the area but the ball carried in on goal and dropped in over Bossio's head and settled in the inside of the net.
Second Half
While Cruz Azul had chances to win the game late, it was Queretaro who did so.
Cruz Azul's Gerardo Torrado had an open look on goal from 20 yards but sent it harmlessly wide of the goal. Emmanuel Villa, meanwhile, had a free header in the box but pushed it just high of the goal.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, the hosts sent their fans home with a triumph to celebrate. Marcelo Romero sent a free kick from near the middle of the field into the box, where Margarito Gonzalez stood. Gonzalez beat Cruz Azul's defense to the ball and fired a shot on goal. Corona made the save but the ball popped out to an unmarked Vila, who fired it right back onto Corona. The ball went off Corona's leg but into the goal and the hosts struck with the dramatic winner.
