Estudiantes Surprise Toluca In Jornada 13 Opener
Estudiantes surprised visiting Toluca 2-1 on Friday in Estadio 3 de Marzo.
Estudiantes now have a 4-7-2 mark while Toluca dropped to 8-3-2 on the season.
Fredy Jose Bareiro opened the scoring just 19 minutes in to give Estudiantes the surprising early lead. Rodrigo "Pony" Ruiz sent a perfectly-placed ball into the middle of the box on a set piece from the right flank. Bareiro emerged from the crowd and headed the ball on goal. His shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced across the goal line.
Bareiro helped create Estudiantes' second goal. Bareiro knifed through Toluca's defense but the ball was cleared away as he got into the box. However, the ball bounced to Carlos Morales, who ripped a left-footed shot from the top of the box into the back of the net and Estudiantes had a stunning 2-0 lead on the high-flying Diablos.
Early in the second half, though, Estudiantes gave Toluca a helping hand. Marcelo Alatorre knocked down Hector Raul Mancilla inside the box and a penalty was awarded to the visitors. Mancilla did well to bury the penalty kick in the 58th minute to give Toluca a chance in the game.
But Estudiantes were able to hold on to the game despite going down to 10 men as Rubens Sambueza was sent off in the 83rd minute.
