Tragedy followed Chivas home from the game at Torreon when the bus carrying the U-17 was struck by a cargo truck on the route Guadalajara-San Juan de los Lagos. Doctor Ricardo Herrera passed away at the scene due to a traumatic brain injury. Four others were injured in the accident, including two players.

The U-17 was traveling back from a 2-3 win against the respective Santos team. A separate bus with the U-20 team was traveling behind the first bus, and was there to witness the accident.

Chivas players Oscar Isao Torres and Cesar Vasquez were the seriously injured players. Physical trainer Corazein Pardo Cepeda, and manager Manuel Martinez were also among the seriously injured. All four were taken to nearby hospitals, but are now reported to be in more stable conditions. Thirty-three year old Doctor Herrera, who had been with the club since 2006, did not survive the accident. The state of the driver of the cargo truck is unknown because he fled the scene.

“I think that Manuel(Martinez) will go on ahead. He’s a strong guy and despite the difficulty of the situation he will go on. He has many possibilities. He was operated on. What’s been diagnosed is that he has part of his medulla(lower half of the brainstem) damaged,” spoke Vergara to a radio station.

“We know what happened. We don’t know the causes, but we know that the chauffeur(of the truck) disappeared. We know it was leased transport. We hope that the company that provides the service responds with integrity knowing where the damage came from.”

The accident will not affect the senior team’s schedule, but may affect both the U-17 and U-20’s league games. Efrain Flores offered a press conference at the Chivas training ground to give further information.

“Fortunately, we’ve had support from them(the Federacion Mexicana de Futbol) early on. You could say that they communicated with us, as did the national team service. They told us that we didn’t have any problems so that, in case there is need to change(game dates), we can do it. I’ll wait for the medical report from doctor (Rafael) Ortega. During the day they were checking the other players. Tomorrow we’ll get together and we’ll see what’s next. Depending on what they say we’ll make our choice,” added Flores.

“We have the support of the federation if it’s necessary to change the games for the U-20 and U-17 teams. The U-20 bus followed 200 meters behind, so they saw the whole process, and that physiological part largely counts as well.”
