Armband Or Not, Torrado And Marquez Equally Important

Gerardo Torrado has been the unquestionable captain under Javier Aguirre but Rafael Marquez, the team's previous longtime captain, is back for the first time since February and could reclaim the captain's spot.

With the return of Rafael Marquez to the Mexican national team Gerardo Torrado has downplayed the possibility of losing the captain’s armband for the Tricolor’s upcoming Hexagonal matches against El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago.

“We are all important in this team and in the end Javier (Aguirre) decides who will be the player that will wear the captain’s arm-band in this team,” declared the Cruz Azul midfielder adding that in the end all of the players share the same goal.

“Rafa (Marquez) is an excellent player, a great teammate, that brings solidity in defense, and he always comes to the national team to give it his best to win every game,” Torrado said of the Barcelona defender.

Speaking to reporters at the Mexican national team’s center for high-end training, Torrado also commented on teammate Cuauhtémoc Blanco being dropped from the squad due to injury.

“He has a lot of quality and makes a difference with the national team but there is also a big group of players that can replace him but with different characteristics, Blanco’s characteristics are unique, but there are players that can contribute their own grain of sand for Saturday’s commitment.”

With or without Blanco, Mexico has work to do. The team, though, has only focused on the ninth Hexagonal match and not the 10th and final game.

“We have not thought about the match against Trinidad & Tobago, our view is focused on the next game against El Salvador,” continued Torrado who much like his Tricolor teammates, that have already commented on the upcoming Hexagonal match-up, and expect a tough encounter.

“We have to be intelligent, not get overconfident, even though we are within one step of obtaining our objective, but we still have not achieved anything. We have to work to the maximum knowing that this will be our most important game in our lives,” concluded Torrado.
