Mexicans Abroad: Hugo Vs. Rafa

Almeria met Barcelona with two Mexicans playing prominent roles in the La Liga match. Elsewhere throughout the globe, the Mexicans Abroad contingent continued to make noise as's Andrea Martinez recounts.

Some Mexicans Abroad pulled double duty a week ago due to European action as well as their domestic matches. It was a fitting way to help squeeze in an extra match before clubs take time off from games in order to give national teams a chance to prepare for and play critical World Cup qualifiers.

The weekend also saw Hugo Sanchez pace the sidelines against Rafael Marquez's Barcelona, and featured a first for Houston's Luis Angel Landin.


Rafael Marquez (Barcelona) -
Marquez did not play in Barcelona’s midweek Champions League 2-0 win against FC Dynamo Kyiv. He then played 60 minutes in the 1-0 win against Almeria.  

Andres Guardado (Deportivo La Coruña) -
Guardado played all 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over Tenerife. A corner kick taken by the midfielder led to the lone goal.  

Hugo Sanchez (Almeria) - Hugo’s Almeria battled, but lost 1-0 against Barcelona.  

Jonathan Dos Santos (Barca Atletic) -
Dos Santos did not play in the 3-0 win against Sabadell.
Juan Seguro (Real Union Club de Irun) -
Seguro did not play in his team’s 3-1 win over Castellon.  


Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart) -
Due to ongoing problems with the club, Osorio did not play in the 0-2 loss against Werder Bremen.  


Michael Layun (Atalanta) -
Layun made it onto the bench, but not the field in Atalanta’s 1-1 draw against AC Milan.  


Giovani Dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur) -
Dos Santos’ was out with an ankle injury for the Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Bolton.  

Carlos Vela (Arsenal) - Vela entered in the 77th minute for the 2-0 win in the Champions League match against Olympiakos. For the weekend 6-2 win over Blackburn Rovers, Vela was not called on.  

Guillermo Franco (West Ham)
- Franco has yet to debut with the Hammers.  


Carlos Salcido (PSV) -
Carlos Salcido made it on to the field in the 57th minute in the Europa League against Cluj, but only made it as far as the bench for the 0-0 draw against FC Utrecht.  

Francisco ‘Maza’ Rodriguez (PSV) - ‘Maza’ played all 90 minutes in the Europa League where PSV won 1-0 against CFR Cluj. Over the weekend ‘Maza’ once against played 90 minutes in the 0-0 game against FC Utrecht.  

Hector Moreno (AZ Alkaamar) -
Moreno played all 90 minutes in the Champions League match in the draw against Standard Liege. The defender then played the entire game in the 1-0 win over NAC Breda.  


Juan ‘Kichi’ Perez (FC Tatabanya)
- Perez did not play in the 3-1 win over Pecsi MFC.  


Alberto Ramirez( FC Inter Turku) -
Ramirez played all 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw against HJK Helsinki and received a yellow card in the 69th minute.  


Nery Castillo (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk) -
Castillo was not called on for Dnipro’s 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.  


Antonio De Nigris (Larissa)
- De Nigris and Larissa are scheduled to play Panathinaikos on Monday.

United States

Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire)
- Blanco did not travel to Los Angeles for the Fire's 1-0 loss to the Galaxy as he was apparently still sufferent the effects of an injured hamstring.

Claudio Suarez (Chivas USA) - Dressed for but did not play in Chivas USA's 2-0 win at DC United.

Mariano Trujillo (Chivas USA) - Another DNP for the Chivas USA player in his team's 2-0 win at DC.

Eduardo Lillingston (Chivas USA) - Lillingston completed the trifecta for unused Mexicans on the bench for Chivas USA. Jesus Padilla, for what it's worth, scored a goal.

Luis Angel Landin (Houston) - Started and played 63 minutes while picking up his first MLS goal in Houston's 1-1 tie with Kansas City. The goal helped Houston clinch a playoff spot. Landin scored his goal as he tucked in a ball from the inside of the left post.


Carlos Moran (Cuenca) -
Moran made his way back from injury and started to train with the team to be called on for the match against LDU Quito. He didn’t make it on the field, but Cuenca won 3-0 and classified into the final Liguilla.  


Rodolfo Espinoza (Club Universitario de Deportes) -
Espinoza played all 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Total Chalaco.  

Emmanuel Cerda (Club Universitario de Deportes) -
Cerda came in the 71st minute in the win over Total Chalaco.  

Nathanial Revetria (Sport Ancash on loan from River, Uruguay)
- Revetria did not make it on to the bench for the 1-1 draw against Juan Aurich.  


Rodrigo Prieto (Caracas FC) -
Caracas’ match against Deportivo Tachira was postponed.  


Mario Garcia (Boyaca Chico FC) -
Garcia was on the scoring sheet for his team as they drew 2-2 against Millonarios.
