Landin Close To Joining Houston
Mexican striker Luis Angel Landin is close to joining the Houston Dynamo, according to published reports on both sides of the border.
Landin, 23, is apparently all but set to join the defending Western Conference champions on loan for the remainder of the 2009 MLS season.
"(On Thursday) it will become official," Morelia President Alvaro Davila told Mexican daily Mural. "It is practically a given because there are only details left to finalize."
Landin spent last season on loan with Cruz Azul but his rights belong to Morelia.
Seemingly always a top prospect, Landin has never really broken through with any of his three clubs. His best season was during the Clausura 2006 season with Pachuca, when he scored seven goals in 17 games.
In 122 Mexican Primera Division matches, Landin has scored a total of 28 goals. He debuted with Pachuca in August 2004 when he was 19 and spent a total of six seasons with los Tuzos before moving on to Morelia.
After failing to establish himself as a consistent scorer over three seasons with Monarcas - he scored six goals in 44 games - he was loaned out to Cruz Azul, where he had seven goals in the Clausura 2009 season. The team, however, finished in dead last and cleaned house. Incoming manager Enrique Meza kept Landin on the roster but brought in Emmanuel Villa as the centerpiece of the offense. Villa has four goals thus far in the Apertura 2009 season.
Landin, who has been in Houston since Monday, will bolster Houston's attack. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear acquired Cam Weaver from San Jose earlier this season to try and provide help for Brian Ching and Kei Kamara. Landin now gives the club another talented forward option.
Houston, who may use their Designated Player slot for Landin's salary, will participate in both the regular season and CONCACAF Champions League campaigns and could use Landin's depth to help keep the team from falling apart down the stretch.
Landin might also see action against his former team. Houston and Pachuca will play twice during the group stage.
