Pumas beat Comunicaciones of Guatemala by 1-0 on Tuesday in a match dominated by the hosts. When Pumas were in the CONCACAF Champions League last time around, the club trotted out mostly young players. The tactic worked - Pumas got past the group stage and won the Clausura 2009 season.
This time around, the club's cup efforts are similar, and thus far so are the results.
Luis Fuentes scored as Pumas UNAM beat Guatemalan side Comunicaciones by 1-0 in Mexico City on Tuesday.
Thus, Pumas open the group stage with a convincing victory over the visiting chapines.
Pumas fielded some regulars, such as Jehu Chiapas and Dario Veron, but for the most part manager Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti gave young players an opportunity to show their worth.
Although the hosts managed to dictate the pace of the game from the beginning, Comunicaciones held firm and did not give up much in front of the goal.
Pumas finally broke through in the 71st minute. Jehu Chiapas fired a corner kick in from the left side. The ball floated towards the near post and Fuentes left his feet to get to the ball. He pushed the ball along with his left foot and the ball skipped past Comunicaciones 'keeper David Guerra and into the back of the net.
The goal lifted Pumas but the team continued to show their domination. The Guatemalans had little response to Pumas' goal and it seemed only a matter of time before Pumas would break through for another goal.
Ultimately, though, Pumas could not find the second goal of the match and the club settled for a 1-0 win.
