Santos overcame an early deficit and eventually had to hold off Cruz Azul but did so in a 3-2 win over la Maquina at Estadio Corona.

Daniel Ludueña was credited with the match winner as Santos scored three times in the second half to claim their victory.

First Half

Cruz Azul opened the scoring quickly. Just seven minutes in, Rogelio Chavez caught Oswaldo Sanchez on the edge of the penalty area. Chavez knocked a ball past Sanchez towards an empty goal. The ball rolled toward the goal when Emmanuel Villa ran onto it and slammed it into the back of the goal.

For the remainder of the half, Cruz Azul did well to maintain their pressure on the hosts and could have doubled their lead on several occasions but instead were done in by poor marksmanship.

Cruz Azul let Santos hang around and went into halftime with a slim advantage.

Second Half

Santos struck quickly in the second half. Matias Vuoso and Darwin Quintero executed a give-and-go well, right down the center of the field. Quintero knocked the ball towards Vuoso, who slipped it back to Quintero. With the defense turned around, Quintero slipped into the area alone and easily scored past Jesus Corona.

Later, Santos took the lead on a fluke play. While the club set up for a set piece on the left side of the box, Juan Pablo Rodriguez received the ball quickly on the right. He evaded a pair of defenders and fired a shot on goal. The ball banged off the right post and across the goal line as a helpless Corona could only watch.

Santos took control of the match minuted later. Daniel Ludueña sent a free kick on goal from the left side of the penalty area. Rodriguez dived to try and head the ball but missed, but his attempt forced Corona to react to the non-shot. The ball bounced towards the goal and eventually across the goal line as Santos opened up a two-goal edge.

Jaime Lozano got a goal back for la Maquina when he headed in a cross from Gerardo Torrado but the goal was too little, too late for Cruz Azul.
