Puebla Get First Apertura Win Over Atlante
After three ties, Puebla break through.
Puebla, along with Morelia, are the only two teams who are undefeated in the Apertura.
This is Puebla’s first win after three consecutive draws.
First Half
The home team, Puebla, started things off by going on the attack. The previous ties did not sit well with Jose Luis Sanchez Sola who wanted a win more than anything. The first chance for Puebla to go up ahead came in the 3rd minute. Gilberto Mora took aim from a free kick, but his shot was stopped by Atlante’s keeper Federico Vilar. In the 9th minute Jared Borgetti had his chance off a corner kick, but his header went just wide.
Atlante responded back in the 17th minute courtesy of Rafael Marquez. Marquez received a pass from Christian Bermudez, Marquez had a first time shot, but Jorge Villalpando did well to stop the shot. Marquez again tried his luck in the 24th minute, except this time from long distance, but again Villalpando was there to make the save.
Carlos “El Pescadito” Ruiz had chance to break the ice in the 31st minute. After a great play, Ruiz had a go, but the shot went over the bar, leaving things squared between the two.
Fabriel had possibly the best chance of the game for Atlante. He was left alone in front of goal, but his shot just went wide. Two minutes later he was in the same situation but this time his shot hit the post. He was getting close, but close doesn’t count. The half ended in a 0-0 tie.
Second Half
The second half started differently from the first. After just the 50th minute, Puebla broke the deadlock and went ahead by one goal. Alejandro Acosta scored off a corner taken by Gilberto Mora. Acosta got his head behind it and Vilar could do nothing to stop the shot.
Puebla wanted another and kept on insisting. El Pescadito Ruiz had a go in the 51st minute, but the defenders stopped his shot, impeding the second goal. Nicolas Oliver also had a chance in the 54th minute, but his shot went just over the bar.
Atlante almost evened things out in the 65th minute. Giancarlo Maldonado tried his luck from long distance as the ball beat the keeper, but not the post as it smashed against it.
Things would just get worse as Jose Gonzalez received his second yellow of the day, leaving Atlante short-handed against a dangerous Puebla.
Puebla could not make the most of their one-man advantage as the game ended 1-0 in favor of Puebla.
