Strong Goalkeeping, Timely Goal Leads Estudiantes To Victory
Fredy Bareiro accounted for the only goal while Mario Rodriguez played a strong game in goal as Estudiantes won at Jaguares, 1-0.
Rodriguez made several standout saves and Estudiantes won 1-0 at Jaguares on Saturday.
First Half
Estudiantes could have opened the scoring at the end of the first half. Elgabry Rangel found himself on the end of a cross on the left side of the area and centered a ball to the front of the six-yard box. Rubens Sambueza had position on a Jaguares defender and got his foot on the ball but sailed his attempt well high over the crossbar with a gaping goal mouth before him.
Jaguares too squandered a scoring chance later in the half. Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista, sporting a new-look mohawk haircut, hit the crossbar from the top of the penalty area deep in stoppage time.
Second Half
Early in the second half, Josiel da Rocha found Cristian Valdez with a long ball, and Valdez walked into the penalty area. But Estudiantes goalkeeper Mario Hernandez stood his ground and made the save.
Minutes later, da Rocha had his own opportunity as he had a clear look on goal from the top of the penalty area but could not get much behind his attempt.
Rodriguez again made a pair of stellar saves later in the half. First, he dived to turn away a shot by Alan Zamora, and then scrambled to turn away Francisco "Panchito" Mendoza's rebound attempt.
Estudiantes had a moment of futility that cost the team a goal. Mauro Ceja found himself alone at the top of the box and fired a shot towards an open goal but his weak attempt rolled slowly and harmlessly past the right post.
Rodrigo "Pony" Ruiz, though, made up for it. Ruiz had a deft chip over the top of Jaguares' defense in the 80th minute. Fredy Bareiro latched onto the pass and ripped a sliding shot into the goal to give Estudiantes the lead.
Jaguares had little to show for the final 10 minutes and the visitors walked away the deserved winners.
