Guardado: Stadium, Fans Were Factors In Win

More than 100,000 supporters packed the mighty Azteca on Wednesday, and Andres Guardado felt the force from the pitch.

Azteca Stadium was packed for the game against Mexico and the US. Tickets were sold out soon after going on sale, and Mexican fans made it out in full force to support their national team. When the afternoon was over, Charlie Davies had scored a goal for the United States while Israel Castro and Miguel Sabah pulled back one each for Mexico.

Andres Guardado felt the force of the fans and was impressed by the support.

“Of course the stadium was a factor. The supporters were impressive,” said Guardado. “I don’t know, but the stadium has something that gives us a lot of strength and gets us through difficult times.”

The high altitude seemed to be a concern among the US contingent, and Guardado admitted that several players from the Mexican side were affected as well.

“Even us that come from far out were affected by the altitude with having to run more. Although they (the US) might say that they weren’t affected, it was a factor.”

The Deportivo La Coruña player was also quick to point out positive details in Mexico’s performance.

“I think that there’s many things to take away: the patience that we had, the tranquility with which we played even though we were down in the score line, I think that’s important to point out.”

Mexico was able to pull off a win at home, but El Tri was 1-0 for sometime during the first half. Guardado noted that it would have been an unfair result.

“It would have been unfair to not have won because they didn’t do anything great to take the points. I wouldn’t have been just at all. We were able to wait for the adequate moment to attack, we controlled the ball, and at the right moment the goal arrived.”
